Bathroom remodeling 5 tips to get you started

Getting a second bathroom can be a challenge! Working with a professional means you should know what to expect as far as the timeline, and by planning ahead, getting organized, and adjusting the schedule, you can certainly make the process easier. Preparation is key to a smooth bathroom remodel! Here are 5 steps to get you started.

1. Hire a professional with experience.

You should ensure the contractor you hire has the skills and experience to complete the project. This goes without saying but we will say it anyway. The last thing you want is for the process to drag on!

We believe it is so important to plan ahead and select materials ahead of time since lead times for materials are so much longer than normal. Production schedules are like a series of dominoes, should anything go wrong they can derail the entire endeavor. You may want to plan your start date around something that has a long lead time if that’s what you’re interested in!

In addition, ask your contractor what measures he has in place for dust control and flooring protection, as well as what standards he has for the job site’s cleanliness, working areas, crew parking areas, and safety on the jobsite. To ensure you and your contractor are on the same page, it is beneficial if all this is worked out beforehand.

2. Reduce the number of products in the bathroom and shower.

Remodeling may double or even triple the number of people who use the bathroom. Plan how you will share your home with your family while still being able to function. Share shampoo, conditioner, and body wash – this is the easiest thing you can do. Having fewer bottles to store in your shower will reduce the number of bottles you will have to store.

Prepare your bathroom for the remodel by going through the contents of all the cabinets, moving out of your current bathroom, and moving into your temporary setup. Sort everything into three categories:

The items we use every day: During the remodel, you’ll need these toiletries and cosmetics every day.

Unused items and extras: Unused items and extras can come in the form of face masks, deep conditioning treatments, special makeup, extra toiletries, etc.

Unopened or unused items: Get rid of them if you don’t use them anymore. You can donate items you know you will never use to someone in need if you have unopened items you know you won’t use.

As with the remodel, this should be done before it begins, but you should review items again before moving into your new space, and you should repeat this process at least once a year!

3. Make sure everyone knows when to go to the bathroom.

Make a schedule based on everyone’s bathroom habits. You may need to wake up early temporarily to make sure everyone gets ready and has time to take a hot shower. It can end up saving a lot of arguments if you take this little extra step!

4. Spread them out.

Avoid bathroom traffic jams by moving some bathroom functions to other rooms of your home. One great example is converting a desk or dresser into a dressing table for hair and makeup and using a powder room or laundry room to brush your teeth.

5. Focus on the results!

Putting the finishing touches on your bathroom(s) while residing in the house is a major undertaking – and your bathroom(s) will not be easy to do!
